My 2nd great grandfather was Richard St George born 1839 at Gortnahoe, Tipperary. He arrived in Australia in January 1859 on board the 'Daphne' having been sponsored by Ellen Carroll.
Richard's father was Thomas St George born 1812 who married Mary Purcell (born 1817) in 1834 in Urlingford, Kilkenny.
Thomas's father was John St George born 1780 in Kilkenny. John married Catherine Delaney in 1804. They had 6 children (possibly 8).
Thomas St George had a brother - Michael born in 1817 - Michael travelled to New York in 1837 and married in 1840 to Julia Kelly. They spent their lives as Farmers in Marion, Olmsted, Minnesota, USA having had 7 children.
Thomas St George was sponsored by his son, Richard, to come to Australia in 1863 with wife - Mary and children Mary and Edward.
Other Siblings of Thomas St George were - Martin who died in Georgia USA; John (born 1809) died in New York; Mary (born 1818) unknown and Catherine St George born 1821 (unknown).
John St George born about 1780 does not appear to have parents that we can trace and we would love to have more information.
One fact that we do have is that Richard St George born 1839 was recorded as being the nephew of Sir Richard Nicholas Purcell. This would be a relative of Mary Purcell.
My mother was told that Richard St George born 1839 should have inherited land and a Crest - was this just a pipe dream?
Or was the inheritance through land owned by the Purcells?
I have been in contact with relatives of both the Purcells and St George families in USA and until I communicated with them - they had no idea of the history (so far recorded of the Irish connection) let alone the Australian connection.
As this overlaps the Purcell families - I would be really interested in hearing from anyone who may have information that would help in tracing back our family history on both the St George and Purcell sides.
I have trees on Ancestry as well as My Heritage and Geneanet.
I am a very serious researcher and have had a trip to Ireland some years ago to assist me with my research. I try NOT add anything to my tree unless I have provided a source or personal information.
