SWEENY Family History
Clan Sweeney is an Irish clan of Scottish origin. The clan did not permanently settle in Ireland before the beginning of the fourteenth century, when they became Gallowglass soldiers for the O'Donnell dynasty of Tyrconnell. The clan claims an Irish ancestry, from ?nroth?n, son of ?ed, son of Flaithbertach ? N?ill, king of Cen?l nE?gain who died in 1036. Through this descent the clan can also claim a descent from Niall Noig?allach (Niall of the Nine Hostages).Select Audience

Sweeny
My Great Grandfather Hugh Sweeny left Roscommon, Ireland in 1842 to travel to Liverpool, England, intending to travel to America or Australia. Instead he stayed in England and settled in Bootle, Liverpool. He met and married an English girl Mary Dagnall. They had 3 children, Henry ( my grandfather) Hugh (never married) and Mary Anne ( never married). The 3 children returned to Ireland and settled in Dublin around 1870. My grandfather Henry, met and married Mary Anne Doyne from Westmeath. They went on to have 8 children, my father Hugh, being the youngest. The ended up living in St. Patricks Road, Drumcondra, Dublin.
I have tracked all the burial places, except my Great-grand-parents, Hugh and Mary Anne Sweeny.
They don't appear be buried i
Sweeny
Hello. My name is actually Hugh Sweeny. As far as I know my family has been in the United States for at least the past four generations beginning with my great grandfather. Hugh is a family name and is given to all first born males in my family, therefore it is quite possible the name Hugh has come from a long line. I donโt have any history beyond my great grandfather, but if you email me I would be more than happy to dig in and find out if there is a connection.
