POWERS Family History
This interesting surname has two distinct possible origins, each with its own history and derivation. Firstly, the name may be locational from the Old French "Pohier", indicating a native of Pois, a town in Picardy, North France, so called from the Old French "pois", fish, because of its well-stocked rivers. Locational surnames were originally given to the lord of the manor, or as a means of identification to those who left their place of origin to settle elsewhere. The surname from this source was introduced into England after the Norman Conquest of 1066.Select Audience

Hello Power(s) family members!
I am looking for my ancestors of John Gleason/Gleeson Power(s) and 1st wife, Margaret Crimmin(s) and 2nd wife, Margaret Costello(e). I descend from the 1st marriage through their son Edmond/Edmund Crimmin(s) Powers (born 31 Dec 1880 in Limerick) who went to America (NY/Chicago) in 1897. John's father is Edmond/Edmund Power and mother Mary Gleeson/Gleason.They lived in Limerick, Ireland (before 1884?) and moved to Dublin, Ireland, Later, John G. went to America (NY/Chicago 1896) to work for Singer Sewing Company.
I would like to know if they are related to Robert de la Poer of Waterford? Did the family leave Waterford and move to Limerick in the 1700's - 1800's?
I would also like to know which branch of Powers we descend. The given names are John Gleeson/Gleason, Richard G, Pierce John, Catherine, Edmond/Edmund Crimmins, John Francis, Francis John, Richard Francis, Marion Frances, Bridget "Bridie", Mary Jane, Kathleen Augusta, Marion Frances, Anna Gertrude and possibly Michael Edward.
I have dna matches to Hourigan, Costello and Lauck, so far. I may dna match Koch and Higgins, as well. My sister is showing dna for Brittany, France and we match dna relatives in Limerick, Ireland. There are about 10 places on the dna map for Ireland.
Thank you!
Elizabeth Birdlebough Vidal, Daughter of Margaret Amy Powers, Grand-Daughter of Edmond Crimmins Powers
Powers
Hello Powers Cousins! I recently found my mother, Margaret Amy Powers, has a DNA match to Conmore Poher, Count of Poher in Brittany, France on mytrueancestry.com. He is an ancestor of Robert Le Poer who was given land in Waterford, Ireland by King Henry II. The surname later became Power/Powers. There is a Pedigree Line online at:
Power et Al DNA and History Project http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~dnapower/genealogy/history/blackboroughdevon.htm???? - I am hoping to find my Limerick Power line to this line. Thanks - Elizabeth B Vidal

If I got it right, I traced my US relative directly to the Netherlands and before that to northern France. Could that be right?
